But...the book was published in 1990. ABE haven't got one. An Amazon partner has, for the "low price" of $299.95! (vs. an original list price of $89.95). Looks like time for an inter-library loan. --KeithBraithwaite
And the inter-library loan has arrived, fresh from the British Library. There seems to be some confusion (on my part) about the title. Maybe I mis-transcribed it from the reference in AgileSoftwareDevelopment. I'll have to check, and move the page as appropriate.
Well, I haven't got more than a few pages into it, but what strikes me immediately is the remarkable origin of these ideas. Ehn was involved with two large research projects, DEMOS and UTOPIA, cross-disciplinary studies over several years, run partly under the aegis of the Swedish trades union movement. The question at hand was: how can we enjoy the benefits of automation in the workplace without turning workers into automata? And in particular, what role does information technology have in securing democracy at work, and how can the tool-using, skill based craft tradition inform the design on software?
Heady stuff. Unashamedly socialist, humanist, and post-modern. Much to chew on. --KB
Keith, I am interested in Ehn's work, and would be very much enjoy reading your reactions to the book as you work through it. --DaveHoover
