ChrisDate? What not How: the business rules approach to application development [ISBN 0201708507 (amazon.com, search)]

Essentially a primer for TheThirdManifesto?, this slim volume was for a while (and may still be yet) handed out as a freebie by Versata to promote their "logic server" product. This thing sits atop an RDBMS and makes it behave something more like the way that Date says Codd said that a relational system always was supposed to in the first place.

In this world, an "application" is a thin layer of declarative business rules on top of a huge relational data store. Naturally, most IT departments of large corporates love this message, and most programmers run screaming from the room. Your boss pays his money and makes your choice.--KeithBraithwaite
