Vernor Vinge has been writing
ScienceFiction since the 1960s, and became more well-known after writing "True Names", which depicted many of the same technological developments that went into making
Neuromancer famous, four years earlier but without the hip, dark attitude (and social commentary). Outside of his fiction - although closely related - he is best known for coining the use of "singularity" to mean a coming change (presumably relating to our enhanced intelligence through computer technology) so dramatic that we cannot possibly conceive it until we go through it. His recent SF focuses almost exclusively on this theme. A partial list of his work:
Short story collections:
- TrueNamesAndOtherDangers?
- ThreatsAndOtherPromises?
AcrossRealtime? (the bobble-universe):
The Zones of Thought (anti-complexity galactic field) universe:
- AFireUponTheDeep?
- ADeepnessInTheSky? (prequel)
- "The Blabber" (anyone know when this takes place?)
- This is an alternate reality where Ravna somehow makes it off of the Tine's World back into the Beyond.

His stories have won several Hugo Awards. He and SF author JoanDVinge? were formerly married.
