I read a lot. Recently (as of December 2002, if not earlier):
- TaiichiOhno, ToyotaProductionSystem --awesome JustInTimeManufacturing? manifesto
- JamesWomack? et. al., TheMachineThatChangedTheWorld? -- the statistical study that demonstrated the productivity, quality, and flexibility benefits of JIT. Makes some bold predictions about the spread of LeanProduction?. I wonder what they think now? (see http://www.uow.edu.au/arts/sts/research/STPPapers/LeanProduction-10.html for a moving rebuttal)
- PaulCollins?, BanvardsFolly? -- subtitled "13 people who didn't change the world". Wonderful, wonderful stories of people who made a big, big stir, then totally disappeared.
- CintraWilson?, AMassiveSwelling? -- awesome little book on the evils of celebrity
- BoFowler?, ScepticismInc? -- hilarious smack at religion
- StuartKauffman?, AtHomeInTheUniverse? -- where does all that emergence come from?''
- PaulPritchard?, DeepPlay? -- a deeply personal and beautifully (if weirdly) written story of a climber's maturation out of pretty depressing circumstances. Useful when pondering what the "Extreme" in Extreme Programming means
- DuffCooper?, Talleyrand? -- a balanced biography of history's greatest statesman
